Background of the study
Media exposure has become a significant factor in shaping linguistic practices, influencing phonetic innovation among language communities. Among Efik speakers in Calabar, exposure to diverse media sources—television, radio, and online content—has led to noticeable changes in phonetic production. This study examines how media exposure fosters phonetic innovation by altering articulation, intonation, and stress patterns in Efik speech (Ibekwe, 2023). Modern media often presents standardized language forms, which may blend with traditional Efik phonetic characteristics, resulting in hybrid pronunciations. The study employs acoustic analysis and sociolinguistic surveys to capture the influence of media on phonetic variation. It also considers generational differences, as younger speakers tend to adopt innovative forms more readily than older generations. Understanding these dynamics is essential for documenting linguistic evolution and developing language teaching materials that reflect contemporary usage (Chinwe, 2024). The research ultimately aims to provide a framework for analyzing the impact of media on phonetic innovation, with implications for language preservation and modernization efforts.
Statement of the problem
Despite the widespread influence of media on language, there is limited research on its impact on phonetic innovation among Efik speakers in Calabar. Shifts in phonetic patterns driven by media exposure may lead to inconsistencies in traditional pronunciation, potentially affecting language identity and comprehension (Ibekwe, 2023). The lack of systematic documentation hampers efforts to integrate modern media influences into language teaching while preserving phonetic heritage. This study seeks to address these gaps by examining the acoustic changes in Efik speech attributable to media exposure and providing insights into the resultant phonetic innovations.
